Condition

Overall this watch is in beautiful and unused near-new-old-stock condition. The movement is running and chronograph and secondary time zone function properly. It might need service soon as it might not have ever been serviced. The dial is clean and the luminescent paint has all aged to a nice, even yellow color. The rubbed gasket to the bezel has started to come apart and has gone inside the dial near 3 and 4 o'clock, but also is visible on the outside of the bezel. The case overall is very nice with almost no wear at all. The outside of the back still retains its factory purple protective waxy film. There is one scratch to the case back and the back of the bottom left lug where someone carelessly opened the watch. The back is loose. The bracelet is very tight and is stamped 1162.

Catalogue Note

Accompanied by original Flightmaster Directions for Use and fitted presentation box.

Omega launched the Flightmaster line of watches in 1969 as a pilot's watch that could compete with Rolex's GMT-Master. Omega's model features a chronograph and second time zone that is easily adjustable for varying changes in location, unlike the Rolex watch where the hand is not adjustable.

The present model, the Ref. 145.0036 is the second version in the Flightmaster series. In this edition, the subsidiary dial at 9 o'clock shows subsidiary seconds, whereas in the first version, that dial showed day and night 24-hour indication. This change came as a result of the feedback from professional pilots who told Omega that they could not see at a quick glance if the watch was running while the chronograph was not in use.

The present reference is known as the 'Pilot' model, as it was intended for use by professional pilots, rather than amateur day-trippers. The yellow cadmium coating to the chronograph hands were easier to see in the dark of a cockpit at night. In addition, the crystal of the watch was pressure-fitted into the case with a rubber gasket that would better withstand the pressure changes caused by decompression from high altitudes.

The present example is exceptionally rare as it appears to have never been worn. The purple protective coating to the back is still intact, there are no surface scratches to the outside of the case and the bracelet is extremely tight and unworn. Examples, such as the present, in such excellent condition are only rarely seen in the market.
