Catalogue Note

Accompanied by a Patek Philippe Certificate of Origin and Instruction Manual in leather folder. Further accompanied by a Patek Philippe presentation box with outer card box.

Composed of 515 individual parts, REF. 5013 is the second most complicated wristwatch after the Sky Moon Tourbillon. The popularity of REF. 5013 is due to its self-winding movement, differentiating itself from the manually wound tourbillon movement of REF. 5016, composed of 506 parts. The importance of this piece is also highlighted by the small number of minute repeating wristwatches made during the early part of the 20th century. Not until the 150th Anniversary of Patek Philippe in 1989 did the brand introduce a minute repeating wristwatch once again and for the first time with an automatic calibre. This innovation spurred Patek Philippe to build the REF. 5013, combining the extra complications of the perpetual calendar, moon-phases and retrograde calendar.

The current example offered at auction is distinguished by the exceptional sound quality of its minute repeater. The 18-karat yellow gold tonneau form case enhances the acoustic properties of the minute repeater and creates a resonance of unrivalled clarity and purity, achieved upon demand with the striking hours and minutes. One hammer strikes the number of hours on a low-pitched gong; two hammers consecutively strike the number of quarter-hours on the low-pitched gong and the high-pitched gong. Finally, the second hammer strikes the elapsed minutes from the last quarter on the high-pitched gong to complete the sequence.
