Cloisonné enamel is one of the three classic enamelling techniques used in watch making. The term is derived from the French word for '"cloison" which means partition or cell, as golden wires are meticulously shaped to delineate coloured zones within a miniaturized scene. The master enameller then fills the contours of his creation with enamel powder, composed of finely crushed glass. In order to prevent distortion of the metal disc during the process of firing in a special furnace, "contre-enamel" is applied to the reverse.

As different colors emerge at specific temperatures, the firing process is arduous and precise. The protruding golden threads are polished down and the vivid scene is coated with a final protective layer of transparent enamel. Finally, the enamel miniature must cool in a controlled environment to prevent thermal cracks.

The current set being offered at auction is part of a limited series of only 12 sets that Patek Philippe produced in 2005.
