Catalogue Note

One of the most historical watch brands, Breguet was founded by Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1775. Highly regarded by the European courts, Breguet became the watchmaker of choice for many historical figures including Kings and Queens such as the Czar of Russia, the King of England, the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire and The Queen of Naples. Developing many of the most important horological complications, including the automatic watch and the tourbillon which he patented in 1801, Breguet also invented the gong spring for repeating watches. Indeed, the repeating watch was one of Abraham-Louis Breguet's obsessions and it is appropriate, therefore, that one of the most important watches in this auction should be this exceptional minute repeating wristwatch. Chiming on demand by means of a slide in the case side, the watch will tell the time by first chiming the hours, then the quarters and finally the minutes. The case of the watch is set with 88 dazzling baguette diamonds totalling 10.5 carats. The watch also carries an exceptional engine turned dial with four different types of engraving and is very much in the classical style of guilloché dials used by Abraham Louis Breguet himself over 2 centuries ago.
