Condition

The movement is running, however it might require service soon. The winder on the back is replaced and does not to be of Cartier manufacture. The dial is very nice and the molded glass cherubs appear to be in nice condition. The bezel has a few small scratches to the enamel near 1 and 5 o'clock. Catalogue Note

Maurice Coüet began work at Cartier in 1911, and among his first works were desk timepieces with celestial inspiration, such as the present lot.

This piece is an extraordinary example of the beautiful works created by Cartier in the late 1910s and early 1920s. The pendulettes of this period, fashioned out of rock crystal, onyx, agate or jade, and detailed with gorgeous hues of enamel and diamonds, drew on the firm's tradition of elegant jewelry designs.

The present lot is particularly unusual for the use of molded glass in the dial. Typically, similar pieces feature guilloché enamel in starburst patterns, or, less frequently, mother-of-pearl or even kingfisher feathers. The exquisitely detailed rendering of two cherubs in molded glass over a starry blue sky in the present example is as charming as it is rare.

An example of a circular rock crystal pendulette with cut-crystal dial in scroll motif is illustrated in Barracca, J., Negretti, G. & Nencini, F., Le Temps de Cartier, p. 61.
