A very lovely and rare piece. The movement is running and striking in phase at time of cataloguing, however it may require service soon. There are three hairlines extending from the central arbor, the most notable of the them reaching 12 o'clock. The case shows surface scuffs throughout from wear and the niello is intact. The watch is accompanied by service paperwork from Henri Stern dated 9 Jun 1987.

The use of niello as a decorative element in watches became very popular in the early part of the 20th century. The creation process is similar to cloisonné enamel work, though its effect is more subdued and it is comparably less expensive. Carved recessed are filled with the darker gray-toned niello, made of a mixture of metallic elements. After exposure to high temperatures, the niello sets and the surface is polished smooth.

Lady's minute repeating pendant watches require particular mastery to create and thus were made in very small quantities. The present example is unusual in that it combines this small minute repeating movement with a niello case. Considered separately, these technical and aesthetic elements are rare, and their combination in the present lot makes it a truly unusual piece, likely made at the request of a client.

To the best of our knowledge, this is the only piece of its type to have come to auction. It is being offered by a descendant of the original owner.
