inscribed with the name of the saint in the halo S(t).Mateus.apos(t)olo;
inscribed in pencil on the reverse St. Marcus (apparently over an old, and correct inscription of St. Mateus Apostolus) and in ink with the inventory numbers 4 and 3- gold ground, tempera on panel, unframed
Condition
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
This panel has curved slightly. The gilding is all original; however, as with all of these pictures, the painted curved arches at the top are not original. The panel is not cracked or damaged in any way. The figure is in very healthy state. There is some slight instability to the paint layer in the lower left and there is some strengthening to the darker folds in St. Matthew's gown.
