Condition
This small copper appears to be in lovely condition, with very good retention of detail and coloration throughout. It is under a slightly matte and dirty varnish and after a cleaning it should become even more attractive. The painting has been framed in a gold-colored metal frame (early 19th Century?, as visible in catalogue illustration), which has cause some abrasions and paint loss around the edge of the images, particularly in the upper left and right of the copper oval, which has been worn down to a pink priming layer that the artist must have used to prepare the copper. A few small chips, very small, at the upper right edge. The abrasions also continue in the lower part and sleeves of the figure, but again at the edges, and these are not as severe as above. All of these, however, are more or less covered by the old frame, and would not really be noticeable to the viewer unless unframed. In the figure the face, wig and costume is very well retained, with wonderful touches of white in the elaborate braid of his brown jacket—also still well modeled and with no real apparent shift in coloration. Perhaps some transparency in the bow, which has some of the brown of the jacket peering through, but this is very minor. Under uv: there are one or two very minor touches in the figure, which are quite insignificant. The touches are mostly covering the aforementioned abrasions, along the left side and some below. Overall, this painting is in very good condition and recommendable.
