Condition

The paper is laid down on canvas. U.V. light reveals what appear to be tears to the forehead, and small area under the left eye, which have been repaired and retouched with paint. Other minor retouches are present around the face and left background. The painting is in a carved and painted gilt wood frame.

Catalogue Note

This direct and immediate depiction of a monk appears to be part of a group of such portraits, clearly taken from life.  Two others of what must be part of the same series were sold in these rooms on January 25, 2008, lots 294-5.  All depict the sitters in a very similar manner, and are all much the same size.
