Catalogue Note

Born in Lodz in 1894, Arthur Szyk began his artistic studies in Paris and continued his training in Krakow. The artist eventually returned to Paris in 1921 and ten years later moved to London. Finally, in 1940, Szyk settled in the United States, where he lived until his death in 1951.

Szyk is known for lavish illustrations of Jewish themes. A satirist and humanitarian, the artist was a passionate advocate for justice, using his art as a vehicle for his crusade.  Through his work, he promoted human dignity, tolerance and democracy. Szyk challenged Nazism and racism and championed his support for Israel.  He drew inspiration from the strength and courage of Jewish stories and figures throughout the years.

In his biblical illustrations, Szyk practised the custom of ornamented medieval illuminated manuscripts. The present lot is a fine example of these works. Bursting with exquisite color and dense, intricate details, this depiction of Moses on the Nile is evidence of the artist's exceptional skill as a miniaturist and illuminator.
