Catalogue Note

The first edition with the commentary of Maharam Tiktin

So influential was Sefer Rav Alfas (also called Sefer ha-Halakhot) that it became the focal point of a prolific literature in its own right. The standard works published alongside the Rif including the commentaries of Rashi, Jonah Gerondi (Rabbenu Yonah), Nissim Gerondi (the Ran) and the Nimmukei Yosef of Joseph Habiba. The present edition however, marks the first appearance of the commentary of Menahem David of Tiktin (Maharam Tiktin). This edition was brought to press by his son Asher, as recorded in a moving dedication found on each of the title pages.

It is quite rare to find complete sets (including the Sha'arei Shavuot and Halakhot Ketanot appended to vol. III) of this edition, and especially in this state of preservation.
