Platinum, diamond and pearl pendant-watch, Verger, Paris, circa 1910

Designed as a pentagonal watch with dial depicting three cherubs, Arabic numerals and blued-steel hands within a rose-cut diamond frame, the obverse of a maiden with garland, flanked by two cherubs with similar surround, within a seed pearl border to the diamond floral drop and suspension loop, together with a platinum chain set with old European-cut diamonds, length 19 inches, signed Paillet on both sides, maker's mark FV for Ferdinand Verger, French assay marks.

Good condition. Set with numerous rose- and single-cut diamonds together weighing approximately 2.00 carats; the rose-cuts are decorative in quality, the single-cuts are approximately I-J color, VS-SI clarity. and of decorative quality. One rose-cut diamond missing. 36 seed pearls measuring approximately 2.6 mm. The inside has the movement numbered 6105, inner caseback numbered 5722, manual movement, currently running. With French marks (eagle) inside case on frame. The platinum chain, of a slightly later date, set with 16 old European-cut diamonds together weighing approximately 1.12 carats, approximately H-J color, VS-SI clarity. In 1872 Ferdinand Verger founded the French maison which designed and created beautiful watches and clocks.  Passing the company on to his two sons, Georges and Henri, the firm soon became known as Verger Frères.  They made jewels and watch cases for some of the most elite jewelers of the world, including La Cloche, Boucheron, Mauboussin, Tiffany & Co., Cartier and Van Cleef & Arpels.  Ferdinand Verger recognized the importance of design as well as craftsmanship and hired talented artists to create miniature works of art to incase his watch movements.  Fernand Paillet, a classical artist who worked in enamel, became Verger's primary miniaturist.  Paillet miniatures were considered a specialty of the workshop and were sold to retailers around the world.
