Description

Composed of Egyptian glazed steatite and faience scarabs, amulets and beads, New Kingdom, 1554-1080 B.C., arranged in swags and fringes, further strung with pearls, the central scarab depicting the god Bes on obverse and reverse, the balance engraved on the back with hieroglyphs, three scarabs flanked by wings of turquoise and royal blue guilloché enamel, further decorated with fancy-shaped links and a lotus blossom similarly enameled, accented throughout with rose-cut diamonds, mounted in gold and platinum.

Condition

Mounting in good general condition with light wear; wear, cracking and relatively minor losses to the scarabs in keeping with age. Overall color of the piece is more subtle than indicated by the catalogue illustration. Enamel remains in good condition. The round, near-round, semi-baroque slivery white pearls bear poor to good luster and generally minor blemishing. The near colorless diamonds are decorative in quality. There is a pin at either end (on the top winged scarabs) as well as receivers for clasp tongues (necklace no longer extant). The scarabs, as described in the catalogue description, were identified by Richard Keresey of Sotheby's Antiquities Department.
In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion. Illustrations in the catalogue may not be actual size. Prospective purchasers are reminded that, unless the catalogue description specifically states that a stone is natural, we have assumed that some form of treatment may have been used and that such treatment may not be permanent. Our presale estimates reflect this assumption.
NOTWITHSTANDING THIS REPORT OR ANY DISCUSSIONS CONCERNING CONDITION OF A LOT, ALL LOTS ARE OFFERED AND SOLD "AS IS" IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE CONDITIONS OF SALE PRINTED IN THE CATALOGUE.
