Catalogue Note

A very similar coffre de mariage circa 1670 attributed to the well-known Parisian ébéniste of Dutch descent, Pierre Gole was sold Christie's London, December 7, 1995, lot 57. Another coffer of the same model attributed to André-Charles Boulle is now in the J. Paul Getty Museum (G. Wilson, Baroque and Régence Catalogue of the J. Paul Getty Collection, Los Angeles, 2008, pp. 8-13). While attributions to Pierre Gole are notoriously difficult, the secondary wood used would support a French manufacture. The use of green-tinted horn is also characteristic of this work.
