Catalogue Note

In her monograph on Alessandro Algardi, Jennifer Montagu discusses the numerous versions of the crucifix he made for Pope Innocent  X.  In addition to those derived exactly from the master's design, the many models which depart from it as later artists introduced their own variations represent the power of the model, which she calls the "most popular and influential of all Algardi's works."
