Catalogue Note
These chairs all bear the labels relating to the inventory taken at Karlsruhe Schloss in 1859. They also bear additional labels relating to subsequent inventories taken during the 1880s.
The set was supplied to Markgraf Carl Friedrich (1728-1811) during the redecoration of Karlsruhe Schloss which was carried out in the second half of the 18th century and they were placed in the throne room (Thronsaal). Karlsruhe Schloss had been built by Carl Friedrich's grandfather, Markgraf Carl Wilhelm von Baden-Durlach (1679-1738) in 1715. The castle formed the center of the city which radiated out from it and was the home of the Margraves of Baden-Durlach and the Grand Dukes of Baden until 1918.
