Catalogue Note

A pair of green-ground orange tubs is illustrated by Linda H. Roth and Clare Le Corbeiller, French Eighteenth-Century Porcelain at the Wadsworth Atheneum, p. 114, no. 62, where the authors note that caisses, probably corresponding to the second size, first appear in the sale records of November 24, 1753 and that by the end of 1755 examples designated as caisses carrées of the first, second and third sizes appeared, the latter two examples selling between 36 and 360 livres, depending on size and decoration.
