Catalogue Note
A la fois symboles de Vanité et figures anatomiques, les écorchés existent depuis la Renaissance. Un exemplaire comparable conservé dans une collection privée (H. 25 cm, cf. cat. exp. op.cit., n°95 et p.198-199) a été récemment attribué au sculpteur anglais Edward Burch. Michael Henry Spang réalisa le modèle en cire vers 1761 d'après le corps d'un condamné disséqué par Dr William Hunter de la Royal Academy de Londres.
