Condition
Very good condition overall. Minor surface dust in the crevisses, with a little bit of vert de gris. Very minor wear to the patina to the inside and edges of the vases.

Catalogue Note
Cette paire de vases dit Médicis est en réalité la réduction en bronze de deux vases antiques en marbre : le vase Borghèse conservé au musée du Louvre et le vase Médicis du musée des Offices de Florence. Ils empruntent aux deux l'iconographie de la frise en relief l'une représentant une scène de sacrifice romain (l'histoire d'Iphigénie), l'autre montrant une scène dyonisiaque. Ces modèles de vases eurent beaucoup de succès au cours des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles. On trouve ainsi des paires similaires répertoriées dans les collections royales françaises (cf. cat. exp. Les Bronzes de la Couronne, op. cit. N°203 et 204, N°230 et 231) et en 1794, dans le catalogue du fondeur romain Francesco Righetti (1738-1819) qui proposait à la vente des copies d'antiques célèbres (cf. Haskell et Penny, op.cit., p.370) .
