- Grande chope allemande en argent et vermeil par Cornelius Poppe, Augsbourg, vers 1690
La scène illustrée se réfère à l'histoire de Didon et Enée contée par Virgile dans l'Enéide (chant 1). Didon, princesse de Tyr en Phénicie, voit son mari assassiné par son frère Pygmalion. Elle s'enfuit et accoste en Afrique du Nord où elle demande à Larbas, roi de Numibie, une terre d'accueil. La roi, réticent à cette requête, ne lui consent qu'une terre qui sera délimitée par une peau de boeuf. La princesse ordonne alors de découper cette peau en très fines lanières et fonde ainsi la ville de Carthage en 814 avant Jésus-Christ. Cette scène est directement inspirée d'une gravure de Matthaüs Merian l'Ancien, illustrant l'Historische Chronica, Francfort, 1630.

Condition
In overall good condition. Should be properly cleaned, the gilding slightly worn. One of the stag's antlers re-soldered but the soldering could be improved.
Nice and large piece, the story of Dido nicely embossed on the body.
Nice gilding colour inside too.
Marks: fully marked on cover rim, the footrim apparently unmarked. Assay-scrape inside the cover.
