Important samovar belge en argent par Claude-Louis Foncez, Mons, 1776
Les samovars, à l'inverse des fontaines à eau chaude, sont rarissimes en Europe occidentale et spécialement dans les Pays-Bas méridionaux.

Claude-Louis Foncez alias Foncé (1713-1783) accède à la maîtrise en 1747. Il présente comme chef d'oeuvre une théière à côtes torses. il est élu connétable de la corporation des orfèvres en 1754, 1763 et 1771. On coonait aussi de lui une belle fontaine de table à trois robinets de 1758, la seule montoise connue à ce jour, illustrée dans Piet Baudouin, Pierre Colman, Dorsan Goethals, Orfèvrerie en Belgique, XVIe, XVIIe, XVIIIe siècles, 1988, p. 202 et dans L'Orfèvrerie en Hainaut, 1985, p. 94. Ce samovar semble être une des dernières pièces connues de l'orfèvre.

Condition

Very impressive piece. One of the wood handles to be refixed. The two wood knops on the ring cover damaged. The shells on the cover slightly worn. One bump near the spout, one restoration above one foot. Marks: fully marked under the spout Amazing and rare piece. Very nice quality.
