Description

  • fully marked on bases with first standard, retailer's mark and engraved weights
  • diameter 9 5/8 in.
  • 24.4cm
plain circular with reeded rims, the borders engraved with initials PF below a royal coronet

Provenance

Prince Frederick of the Netherlands (1797-1881), probably to his daughter
Wilhelmina, who in 1850 married King Charles (reigned 1859-72) of Sweden (Karl XV) and Norway (Karl IV), probably to their daughter
Louise, who in 1869 married King Frederik VIII of Denmark (reigned 1906-12), thus by descent

Condition

a few with very minor salt stains, all with light scratches from use, good condition overall

Catalogue Note

The monogram PF is that of Prince Frederick of the Netherlands (1797-1881), second son of William I.  His daughter Wilhelmina married Charles XV & IV of Sweden and Norway, and their daughter Louise married in 1869 Frederick VIII of Denmark.

A pair of 1815 chesnut vases retailed by Diemont and engraved with identical royal cypher were sold Sotheby's, Paris, 30 October 2008, lot 321.  Other elements of this service by J. G. Dutalis are at the Palace of Het Loo and in Dutch private collections (See Joseph Germain, Dutalis 1780-1852, No. D84, p. 260).
