Catalogue Note

Alva Vanderbilt, later Mrs. O.H.P. Belmont, had a tea set probably of this design, recalled by her daughter Consuelo Vanderbilt Balsan, the former Duchess of Marlborough:
In front of my mother's place there was a sumptuous silver tray on which stood a tea service and a chocolate pot.  They were large and heavy and were embossed with scenes from Flemish life recalling those in the tapestries on the walls.  They seemed to me much too heavy for my mother's delicate hands to lift. (The Glitter and the Gold, p. 21).
