Catalogue Note

Ewen was famous for combining painting and sculptural traditions in his art work.  His trademark products were large panels of plywood gouged with a router and then roughly worked over with paint to depict dramatic meteorlogic or cosmic events.

Ewen's lifelong fascination with science was to become the source material for his most important art.

This fine work, Hail Storm, is half diagram and half  skyscape. Ewen has knitted together a physical sense of the air and the atmosphere with an analytic  lesson in weather conditions and scientific facts cleverly and emotionally illustrated.
