Catalogue Note
Jackson liked the turn of the seasons - spring and fall - when the landscape was in transition. In the fall, he confronted the hardwood forests as their summer green ignited into a blaze of crimson, scarlet, chrome, and orange. In the spring, Jackson usually planned annual trips along the St. Lawrence River, from Quebec City to the Charlevoix region. In this painting at Poltimore, just above Wakefield in the Gatineau hills north of Ottawa, he found the same material he regularly sought out much further east: the softening of the winter's grip on the landscape - old winter snow, freshening streams, receding ice, melting drifts, budding trees, and emerging earth and grass. At Poltimore he discovered a scene that presented him with all these elements and he captured all its aspects in a thorough and accomplished rendering.
