Catalogue Note

MacDonald's eye for the least anecdote that would make a painting was acute.  This charming and perfectly composed domestic scene proves the point easily enough, but the way in which he renders the subject is equally notable here.  MacDonald's sure sense of scale and colour is matched by his almost cavalier application of paint, from the whipped-cream whites to the blues, where the texture is created by scratching with the handle of the brush.

As the acknowledged doyen and poet of his circle, MacDonald maintained his leadership by widening and deepening the range of subjects and attitudes that he and his fellow artists tackled.
