Condition

This painting is clean, fresh and in overall very good condition. Under UV, there is in-painting around the edges of the board, likely due to rubbing from a previous frame, on all four sides. Other touch-ups are apparent around the chimney, in the trees behind the cabin, and in the snow in the foreground.

Catalogue Note

Franz Johnston fused his love of the outdoors with his unquestionable artistic skill to produce a prolific body of landscapes that exude a unique Canadian ambiance. Dusk is a fine example of Johnston's assured and confident style, where the interior warmth from the log house floods out into the crisp night. the canvas is bathed in Johnston's signature blue and plum hues that somehow mask the bitter cold. The snow laden trees and surrounding hills cause the viewer to pause and beckons one to bask in the brilliance of a winter's eve.
