Catalogue Note
Varley painted for the Canadian War Memorials during World War I and produced some of his most powerful and moving works. Nearly all of his paintings from that time were taken by and now hang in the Canadian War Museum and the National Gallery of Canada, but a few smaller paintings, such as this one, were retained by the artist and have found their way into private collections. The subject is the belfry of the Hotel de Ville in Arras.
