Catalogue Note

This marvelous panel has not been seen publicly since 1954 when it was sold through Dominion Gallery to the British High Commissioner in Ottawa.

The women pictured appear to be working.  With her hands held up in front of her, the figure on the far right appears to be threading a needle, while the woman next to her, with her head down, is sewing.

Morrice's choice of palette, particularly the mastic pink of the background arcade, suggests the work dates from 1895-96.  During this time, Morrice had cultivated a friendship with the American painter Robert Henri.  His influence is evident here through Morrice's use of bold pigments and strong brushwork, resulting in a charming scene that is historically significant to Morrice's artistic trajectory.

We extend special thanks to Lucie Dorais for her contribution to this entry.  Ms. Dorais is currently compiling the catalogue raisonné for James Wilson Morrice.
