Catalogue Note

Casson rarely ventured outside of Ontario and this magnificent canvas is a departure from the small towns and farmland that was so familiar to him.  After Cutting, Quebec represents the impact that the changing Quebec landscape had on him, and the effects of logging on the natural environment.  It is a rare chronicle of the Canadian landscape now touched by industry.

This work exemplifies Casson's graphic style and ability to invite the viewer into the depicted setting using subtle and muted tones.  This late work marks Casson's return to less stylized compositional schemes after his brief foray into decorative cubism. Compositionally, After Cutting, Quebec is efficiently and brilliantly organized.  Five horizontal bands of colour are activated by the warm complementary foliage, formed by his flat brushwork.

Casson's ability to articulate a scene and message create an immediate and lasting impact.
