Catalogue Note

From his first visit to Georgian Bay, soon after his arrival in Canada in 1912, Lismer was enchanted and inspired by all the variety it had to offer.  Pink or weathered granite rock, clear, blue water, wide skies, twisted pines, protected bays, primeval forests, and galaxies of islands - all posed for the eager artist. Even much later in his life, Lismer was as excited and enthralled by this place as he had been in the beginning.

This gigantic tangle of pine roots, rocks, flowers, and trees is full of the energy and tumult that Lismer felt whenever he painted here, and this powerful composition transmits this quality directly to the viewer.
