Catalogue Note
'The square format of this Lilydale landscape is exceptional among William's early landscapes. In its concentration on the atmosphere and airy drama of the landscape, the motif allows Williams freer range and has loosened up his touch. Unlike the early figures, the vigorously painted landscape has not led Williams into over-emphasis. An airy lucidity is retained due to the dramatic simplification of the landscape, the lowering of the horizon line and the heightening of the drama in the sky.'1
