Catalogue Note

Clarice Thomas (1917-1999) was the youngest daughter of John Young, co-founder of the Macquarie Galleries, Sydney (with Basil Burdett).  She assisted at the gallery and became deeply interested in Australian art and artists, meeting many of those who exhibited there, including Roland Wakelin, Lloyd Rees, John Eldershaw, Treania Smith, Arthur Murch and Roy de Maistre from whom Clarice took painting lessons.  After her father's death in 1946 she took over his art restoration and valuation business, working in the city until 1960.  In 1967, she was appointed honorary Director of the Manly Art Gallery in 1967, a position she held until 1983.
