Catalogue Note

'This one belongs quite clearly to the 1950s... the time of the Crucifix paintings'.1

Nolan's first visits to Italy in 1951 and 1954, resulted in successful exhibitions in both London and Australia.  In the words of one reviewer, 'In Italy he feels at home.  After absorbing and digesting it, pondering on its structure and its symbolism...  he understands its magic instinctively'.2
