Catalogue Note
The initials are those of Henry Bates Grubb (1774-1823), of Mt. Hope, Lancaster Co., PA. The Grubb family were wealthy ironmasters, who established Cornwall Iron Furnace in 1742. Mount Hope, the federal style mansion Henry built in 1800, exists today as a winery open to the public for tours and events. Cornwall Iron Furnace is located six miles form Mount Hope and is a National Historic Landmark also open to the public for tours.
