the bowl applied with a clip, the base geometrically pierced, detachable tapering spout, marked on rim of detachable spout W.COWAN in two sizes of letters in stepped rectangle and with bird, clip scratched 8/0, repairs

bowl with patch near pierced base, a few splits to flange of bowl and repaired splits to rim

This mark is attributed by Stephen Ensko to William Cowan of Fredricksburg and Richmond, VA (1803), and also to William Cowan of Philadelphia (1808).  George B. Cutten attributes this mark to the former.
