Catalogue Note

The "Shopping Cart Chair" was created by Tom Sachs as part of a collaborative installation with Dries van Notten for a series of windows they designed for Barney's Madison Avenue store in 1993.  The small series of chairs were then given to the Whitney Museum for exhibition and sale at the Store Next Door, the museum's adjacent retail location.  The present lot is one of the earliest works by the artist to appear at auction.
