Catalogue Note

The first version of the marble dancer by Canova is carved around 1808 for the French Empress Josephine Bonaparte, now in the Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg (Russia). A second version, now in the National Gallery of Canada, was completed in 1822 for an English patron, Sir Simon Houghton Clarke. The original gesso modello for Canova's work, dated 1806, is preserved in the Gipsoteca at Possagno (Italy).
