Catalogue Note
The in total Twelve Labours of Hercules are a series of archaic episodes connected by a later continuous narrative, concerning a penance carried out by the greatest of the Greek heroes, Heracles, romanised as Hercules.
His struggles made Hercules the perfect embodiment of an idea the Greek called pathos, the experience of virtuous struggle and suffering which would lead to fame and, in Hercules' case, immortality.
These figures of Hercules have been modelled after the originals which were designed for the Italian Villa Lombardi in 1735.
