Catalogue Note

Pierre Julien (1731-1804) modelled his original Amalthea in 1787. This marble group, a version of The Beauty and the Beast, was originally part of the decoration for the dairy at the Chateau Rambouillet, which Julien sculpted for Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette on the eve of the French Revolution.
