Catalogue Note
Also known as Il Porcellino, the Calydonian Boar, a Hellenistic marble figure, was first recorded by Aldrovandi in his account of the ancient statues of Rome in 1556. Since 1591 it was preserved in the Uffizi and at that time it was one of the best known antique pieces.
Grand Duke Cosimo II. commissioned a bronze copy of the Porcellino which was executed only after his death in 1634 by Pietro Tacca. Until today, Il Porcellino adorns the Mercato Nuovo in Florence.
