Description
- Ambrogio de Predis
- Double portrait of a woman with a decorative headdress, and a man with a red cap, both en profile, in a stone niche
a pair, both oil on panel, set in one frame
Provenance
W. Graham Esq;
His sale, Christie's, unknown location and date (according to a label on the reverse).
Condition
The actual painting is less yellow and darker in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The painting consists of two single panels set in one frame. Both panels are flat and stable, and cradled. There's a minor tendency towards flaking in the male portrait, and the upper background is a little abraded in this portrait.
In both portraits, scattered discoloured retouchings are visible throughout. Inspection under UV light reveals more extensive retouchings to the background, to both faces, and in the cap of the man. Both paint surfaces are under a very dirty layer of varnish.
Offered in a decorative gilt plaster and wood frame with a few losses. (MW)
