9.5-cm enamel dial signed Idrocronometro, P Embriaco, Roma, the adapted movement with deadbeat escapement driven by a remote spring barrel re-wound at intervals by a water mechanism, the adapted and earlier gilt-bronze case composed of shells and scrolls, the water tank visible below the dial and applied with a dolphin mount inscribed Aqua Est Vita; now fitted with an electric pump
Condition
PROSPECTIVE PURCHASERS MUST INSPECT. Dial with hair crack and minor edge chips. Some rusting to movement. Water mechanism not tested and fitted with later pump and pipework. Gilding to case is generally good.

Catalogue Note
Father Giovan Battista Embriaco, (1829-1903), was both a Dominican priest and scientist. His particular interest was in clocks powered by water. He first exhibited his clocks in 1867 at the Paris Exhibition. He is most famous for his water clock, built in 1873 for the gardens of the Villa Borghese in Rome and known as the Pincio Hydrochronometer.
