Description

  • An estuary with two sailing boats, a house and a church in the background, a fishing boat and fishermen in the foreground
  • oil on panel

Provenance

Anonymous sale, Amsterdam, Paul Brandt, unknown date, as Wouter Knijff (according to a label on the reverse).

Condition

All three paintings are slightly warmer in tone than the catalogue illustrations suggest. An estuary with two sailing boats: The single panel has an old horizontal crack running through the upper half, as can be seen on the catalogue illustration. The panel is lightly bevelled on all but the upper sides. The paint surface is under a very dirty varnish layer. Discoloured retouchings are visible along the crack and in the sky. Inspection under UV light reveals additional small scattered retouchings and strengthening in the figures and boats. Offered in a decorative gold painted plaster and wood frame in good condition. Fisherman on a bridge: The oval panel is flat and stable, and unbeveled, and consists of two planks joined horizontally. Retouchings can be observed in the sky and along the join, but otherwise, the paint surface seems to be in good condition. Inspection under UV light reveals some larger areas of retouching in the sky and in the background centre right. The paint surface is under a very dirty varnish layer. Offered in a decorative gilt plaster and wood frame, with a few losses. Wooded landscape with a castle: The single panel is flat and stable and beveled on all sides. No damages are apparent and the paint surface is in good condition, if a little abraded in the background. Inspection under UV light reveals a few minor retouchings in the sky and castle, and a few larger areas of retouching in the sky. Offered in a decorative carved and gilt wood frame in good condition.
