Provenance

This service has been in the possession of the same Dutch family of renown at least since the time of their forebear IsaƤc Dignus Fransen van de Putte (1822-1902). Van de Putte gained his fortune as colonial entrepreneur and served as minister in various Dutch cabinets. He has always been considered the first owner of the service, which might not be entirely consistent with its date of manufacture. However, it is likely that he might have purchased the service at auction during his stay on the island of Java between the 1840's and circa 1860.

Literature

Geoffrey A. Godden, Mason's Patent Ironstone China, London 1971, p. 102, notes that the maker of this service is yet to be identified, but however, is reknown for 'quality Ironstone type ware of the 1820 period'.
