Both paintings are less bright and less yellow in tone than the catalogue illustrations suggest. Follower of Gaspar Peeter Verbruggen: The canvas appears to be unlined and is a little uneven. Stretcher marks are slightly visible to the front. No damages are apparent. A few discoloured retouchings can be observed in the background and in the lower centre. The paint surface is under a very dirty varnish layer and there's a heavy craquelure pattern. Inspection under UV light is largely impeded by the thick and discoloured varnish layer, but the flowers appear to be well preserved. Offered in an ebonised wood frame with a gilt fillet in good condition. Manner of Luca Giordano: The canvas has a recent relining. The paint surface is under an unevenly cleaned varnish layer and there's some surface dirt. Tiny scattered retouchings can be observed throughout, which is confirmed by UV light. A few additional retouchings in the Christ and clouds are revealed. Offered in a plain wood frame in good condition. (ML/MW)
