Description

  • Francesco Guardi
  • A pair of Italianate harbour scenes, with small vessels, and numerous figures on the quays
  • a pair, both oil on canvas laid down on board

Condition

Manner of Francesco Guardi: The catalogue illustrations are representative for the actual paintings. Both paintings are laid down on board with a wood raster, which has somewhat flattened the paint surfaces. Otherwise, no major damages are apparent and in both paintings the paint surface is in good condition. Inspection under UV light is impeded by the dirty varnish layer, but there are possibly some minor retouchings in the sky. Offered in parcel gilt wood frames with decorations in all corners, in good condition. Follower of Joseph Heintz the Younger: The actual painting is deeper and more red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The copper plate is flat and stable, but there's some minor oxidation throughout. The paint surface is under a very dirty and unevenly applied varnish layer. Discoloured retouchings are visible in the sky. Inspection under UV light reveals additional scattered retouchings. Offered in a plain wood frame with some damages. Manner of Francesco Guardi: The actual painting is less yellow in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas is unlined, and stretcher marks are visible to the front. The paint surface is under a dirty varnish layer. Overall, the painting is in very good condition. Offered in a decorative gilt plaster and wood frame in good condition. (ML/MW)
