Provenance:
Possibly in the collection of the Barron family in the 18th Century;
Mr. Oswald Barron, London, by 1933 (according to a news clipping from The Times of 28 April 1933 attached to the reverse);
Sir Bruce Ingram, O.B.E., M.C., London,
By whose Executors sold, London, Sotheby's, 6 May 1964, lot 161;
With Cooling Gallery, London;
Unknown sale, The Hague, Van Marle and Bignell, between 1970 and 1974, where bought by the late admiral J.J.L. Willinge (all the above as by Willem van de Velde the Younger);
Thence by descent.
Literature:
M.S. Robinson, The Paintings of the Willem van der Veldes, Greenwich 1990, vol. 1, pp. 268-9, cat. no. 824, reproduced.
Catalogue note:
Inscribed with an old inventory number on the reverse: 8267.
According to Robinson (see Literature below, p. 268), this painting is probably by Van de Velde although severely cleaned. The signature on the reverse is the one that Van de Velde the Younger used from about 1678 to his death in 1707. However, the signature could have been added later. Robinson gives as a possible explanation that the picture was used as a decoration for a sea chest and became damaged, but was possibly authenticated later by Van de Velde.
Condition report:
The panel is sound. There are some old restorations visible in places. The paint is thin in places. On close inspection there are some tiny flecks of old paint loss in the central section and elsewhere. There is some minor surface dirt. Ultraviolet light reveals retouching to the edges and to the lower right and lower central sections of the sea. Further scattered retouching in the sky and in between certain areas of the rigging. Held in a lightly decorated gold painted frame in fair condition.
