Description

  • Saint Ursula
  • tempera on panel, gold ground
  • 105.5 by 43.5 cm.

Condition

The panel consists of three planks, joined vertically and unbevelled. One join is open (as shown in the catalogue illustration); the planks are bowed. The other join is reinforced with a strip of tape attached to the reverse. The second plank has a vertical crack of circa 25 cm running from the bottom upwards. Both the gold ground and the tempera paint are flaking in some places and extensive paint losses are visible at the bottom of Saint Ursula and along the open join. The paint surface is under a layer of dirt. The painting needs conservation treatment. Inspection under UV-light reveals minor spots of retouching in the saint's face. Offered in a modern, painted wood frame, slightly damaged. (JD)
