An Italian carved walnut cassone, Tuscan late 16th/early 17th century

the rectangular moulded top lifting to reveal a later candlebox, on later paw front feet

Old marks, chips and scratches commensurate with age. There are hairline cracks generally and there is a added piece of wood to rear right side and smaller patch on the left edge of the top. There is an area of infill to the top near the front. The batons beneath the top are a later replacement, also there is a section along the top edge of the back which is a later addition due to the later hinges. The side friezes beneath the top probably later. The candle box inside is later. The internal lockplate inside is now missing. There is a trapezoid shaped later piece of wood in the left side. The feet are later. In otherwise good restored condition.
